Alabama Cav in the Carolinas - 1865
Tue May 29 12:08:07 2001
On January 2, 1865 an order was issued reorganizing some of Wheeler's Cavalry. Hannon's Brigade was ordered disbanded, with the 53rd Alabama and 24th Alabama Batt'n being sent to Hagan, and the 11th Georgia Cav to Allen. I have good evidence indicating this part of the order was NOT carried out, and Hannon's Brigade remained intact under Iverson, until command of his division went to P. M. B. Young in late March of 1865....However, researchers have assumed the order was carried out and have erroneously listed Hannon's command with Hagan in March of 1865 in North Carolina, particularly at Monroe's Crossroads. Also, I believe Wheeler was in error in listing Hannon as wounded at Monroe's Crossroads, NC on March 10, 1865, when he probably was actually referring to Harrison. Can anyone help me sort this out with first-hand period accounts?
