This seems to be further evidence that Wheeler lost effective control of some of his brigades. In another example, Ferguson's Brigade remained in Georgia weeks after it was ordered north into the Carolinas, not leaving the state until after Bentonville.

Something similar happened during the Tennessee Raid of August 1864, in which part of Wheeler's command became separated in eastern Tennessee and remained in southwestern Virginia for some time.
