Prior to becoming the 8th Confederate Cavalry (about May 17, 1862), this unit served under General Polk's command in the Army of the Mississippi. It was formed as a merger of the 4th Mississippi Cavalry Battalion (Baskerville's) and three companies from Lt.Col. Richard H. Brewer's Cavalry Battalion on March 28, 1862. Capt. C. S. Robertson's Co. "G" (the "Hardin County Yankee Hunters") from Tennessee left the battalion on April 18, 1862, to join the 1st Confederate Cavalry. Remaining companies included three from Alabama and three from Mississippi.
