A couple of minor points. Although Capt. Roddey's company was considered an integral part of the Mississippi battalion, it always served independently. Col. Wade petitioned for its return in vain, and when hope expired for the 8th Confederate to add this company to the nine from Brewer's, Baskerville's and Beall's battalions, another had to located.

This was Capt. Field's company from Lowndes County MS. This company mustered at Columbus MS on May 16, 1862, and went to Virginia as Co. "K", 2nd Miss. Inf. Battn. Capt. Field wrote from Hamilton's Crossing VA on Dec. 23, 1862, to request that his company be mounted and transfered to Wade's regiment. The War Department agreed and transfer approved on Jan. 21, 1863.

The first two companies ("A" and "B") of the 8th Confederate came from Brewer's Battalion; the last three ("H", "I" and "K") came from Beall's Battalion. Four companies ("C", "D", "E" and "G") came from Baskerville's Battalion. Companies "A" and "B" were called the "Mountain Rnagers" and the "Chambers Cavalry". The handwriting was difficult to read, but it appears that Companies "H" and "K" were the "Emricht" or "Emericht Rangers" and the "Goldthwaite Rangers". Companies "C", "D" and "G" were the "Pope Walker Troopers", the "McCaa Rangers" and the "Cozart Cavalry".

Do you know of other company names?
