The letter game.

I think that the source of the confusion is the changing of letter designations, possibly on more than one occasion.

I know that Company D of the 8th Conf. Cav., McCaa Rangers, was Company B when it was a part of the Pope Walker Battalion.

I also know that Abert's Company was partially or wholly from Lowndes County, Miss., whatever its letter designation.

I also know that the Golden family is a well-known and respected family in Lowndes County, Miss. That does not preclude a "Golding" being a Captain, but is a pretty good clue that “Golden” is correct.

Dunbar Rowland records Abert’s Company as Company C of Pope Walker Battalion and notes that the county of origin is not specified.

The Mississippi SCV chapter that keeps track of what counties the companies came from records Abert’s Company of the 4th Battalion Miss. Cav. as from Lowndes County, but with no letter designation.

Rowland shows “Company A -- Field’s Company, Pope Walker Troopers (county of origin not specified)”
