Jim MartinMy "lost" ancestor!Tue Mar 27 12:04:32 2001I've posted this before, but since I've still not been able to find him and as we have new additions to the message board, I'll try again.VOLNEY FLEMING WILLOUGHBY - JACKSON CO., ALThis is my ggg-grandfather. He moved to Jackson Co., AL from Hamilton, Co., TN in 1856 where he received a land patent for 80.08 acres. He lived near Stevenson, AL. His oldest son Monroe F. Willoughby enlisted in the 17th Tennessee Infantry, Co. I, as did a group of other men from Jackson Co. According to a biography in "The History of Logan County, Arkansas" written about his youngest son Andrew V. Willoughby, Andrew recalled at age seven riding on the back of his father's horse to the place where Volney "enlisted in the Southern Army". Andrew was born in Dec. of 1855, so if his memory was accurate, his father enlisted sometime between Dec. of 1862 and Dec. of 1863. Also, in this biography it is stated that "Volney was killed at Chickamauga" and "Monroe died during the war".I've never been able to find any CSR for Volney in Alabama, Tennessee or Georgia. There is a V. Willoughby listed in the 4th Tennessee Infantry; however, this is a Vincent Willoughby. From the dates and other information can anyone help me find this man or give suggestions based on the enlistment date and location which Confederate units might be my best choices? Thanks,Jim MartinJackson County possibilities....
