Dear Alan,

Volney Willoughby's family was horribly divided in their allegiances. His wife's brother was a Captain in the 5th Tennessee Infantry (US). A letter I own, addressed to Volney's oldest daughter addressing her as cousin, was written by a T.D. Eddington, later a Major in the 4th Tennessee Inf. (US). Because of the extreme difficulties in finding him (I've been searching for fifteen years), I've wondered if it is possible that he enlisted under an alias? I've seen examples of this with other Confederate soldiers. For whatever reason, maybe he didn't want an accurate record of his service.

How common was this use of false names, especially in areas where loyalties were divided (i.e., East TN, NW AR, N AL and the border states?

Jim
