John Key doesn't appear in the 3rd or 2nd U.S., or 1st Ala. Cav. Regt. (U.S.) There's a John Key from Walker County who served as 1st Sgt. of Co. "E", 28th Ala. Inf. Regt. He was captured at Orchard Knob, Nov. 23, 1863 and sent to Rock Island. However, he remained in prison until after the war ended. So much for that theory. However, there are other John Keys in C.S. service who could've moved to Walker County after the war and might've served in U.S. frontier service.Rock Island is the right place.
