I'm confused.....

Looking at the 28th Alabama records, it appeared that John Key is a likely candidate for the U.S. Volunteers, matching all the criteria that you provided. We also learned that the 2nd & 3rd Volunteers were recruited at Rock Island, where he was imprisoned. We even had another post to the effect that members of the volunteer regiment in question were discharged on Nov. 7, 1865, the date you had.

I'm curious as to why John Key's records show that he remained in prison until after the end of the war. Where did you find his enlistment information? By the way, he was 1st sergeant of his company in the 28th Ala. and was captured when his regiment was overrun on Orchard Knob (near the present site of Erlanger Hospital) at Chattanooga. The date should be Nov. 23rd, not Nov. 24 as show in his record. The regimental flag can be seen at the ADAH website.
