Co. A of the 40th, The South Sumter Guards, under Capt. Ezekiel S. Gully, who was promoted, followed by Capt. James Cobb, was composed of men from the southern part of Sumter County, with a few, I believe, from the northern part of Choctaw County. Fincher was likely a resident of Sumter prior to the war. Companies A, C, and K came from Sumter.

Pickens County, which is directly north of Sumter, supplied Companies B and G to the 40th.
