Records of Co. "H", 9th Ala. Cav. Regt. mention both James H. and Joseph B. Chesnut. This company organized at Blue Pond and Pleasant Gap, Alabama, November 15, 1862, mustering as Company “C” of the 19th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion under Capt. Solomon Smith Clayton. Members were from Cherokee and DeKalb Counties. The 9th Alabama (usually called the 7th Ala. Cav.) organized when Thomason's 19th and Malone's 14th Cavalry Battalions merged on April 15, 1863.

Joseph B. Chesnut was captured near Trenton, Ga., Nov. 3, 1863, and released from prison at Camp Morton, Ind., May 18, 1865.

James H. Chesnut appears on the Dec. 1863 roll as missing in action at Sevierville, Tenn. However, Federal reports give his name as a deserter who was released on oath of allegiance at Knoxville, Tenn., Feb. 6, 1864.

I hope this helps you.
