Bryan Dameron McRaven40th AL Infantry, Co. H, Sgt. John NewtonSat Dec 9 10:32:47 2000 I have several relatives who served in the 40th AL Infantry, Co. H., but I am trying to confirm the service of a particular ancestor. Company H was from Sumter County, and according to what I have, my g-g-g-g-uncle John Newton was a Sergeant in Company H. After seeing a previous answer on this unit which included the age of the soldier, I was wondering if there were records of this type for Company H. There were a couple of unrelated Newton families in Sumter when the war broke out, and two John Newtons appear on the census. One served in Fowler's-Phelan's Battery, the other in the 40th Infantry.
