Capt. A.M. Moore was paroled at Vicksburg as Capt. of Company K of the 40th Alabama. I have not recorded the designations of the three companies formed in or recruited from Sumter Co., but here is what I have in my notes:

40th Alabama Infantry, Co. C
40th Alabama Infantry, Co. (?)
40th Alabama Infantry, Co. (?)
[The three 40th Ala. Companies from Sumter were originally under Capts. Andrew M. Moore, W.A.C. Jones, and Ezekiel Gully.]

No soldier with the last name "Newton" is found in the 40th Ala. in the paroles at Vicksburg.
