Bryan, Something is amiss here. I took interest in your post as I am doing research on the 40TH Alabama Infantry Regt. Company H was not recruited from Sumter County, but it was from Perry County and commanded by Capt. C.C. Crowe. The companies from Sumter in the 40TH were A,C,and K and Company F primarily from Choctaw County had a few men from Sumter. There was no Sgt. John Newton in the 40TH Ala. The only Newton in fact that I have listed on the regimental rolls is a Benjamin Newton of Company D (recruited primarily from Choctaw County).What is the source of your information?
