I could very well be mistaken on John Newton's having served in the 40th AL, Company. I found his name listed in Broadfoot's Compendium of Confederate Soldiers. I am not sure, but I think broadfoot's got their info fro the National Archives, not the State Archives. I have run into this situation before, as the aforementioned Newton's brother, Isaac Newton, did not show up in the state rolls of Co. A, 36th Alabama, but he showed up in the National rolls.

Which company of the 40th Alabama was captained by Andrew McNary Moore? He was captured at Vicksburg I believe, and he was from Sumter Co. According to the information I have, he was Captain of Company H?
