Re: Railroad travel in 1864 -1865

Thank you, gentlemen.

Today I found a map on the US Army Center of Military History. It included a map (#28) that shows the advance of the Union Army year by Year. The map shows that both Chattanooga and Knoxville were on the absolute edge of Union territory. It would seem that the doctor probably boarded the train at a small station north of Knoxville, such as Rogersville Jct . All towns from Knoxville north, through Lynchburg, to the Chesapeake Bay were in CSA hands. I agree that the Yankees did have a pendency to loot and burn where they could: the "devil with" the children. Dr. Holloway saw a lot of this. He was a regimental surgeon with the 30th Alabama Infantry from "Dalton to Jonesboro" and back to North Georgia for the entire Atlanta Campaign. His regiment lost 45 men at Jonesboro in less than 30 min. He was the only doctor with the 30th AL. FYI, I also posted on the Tennessee message board as well as Virginia.
