Railroad travel in 1864 -1865

I am writing a biography of a VA doctor, RG Holloway. I'm trying to find out how he traveled from around Chattanooga, TN to the Shenandoah Valley in October of 1864. Dr. Holloway was in North Georgia (Dallas, GA) on Oct. 10, 1864. He was in Gordonsville, VA with his private horse, by Oct. 18, 1864, This was a distance of around 500 miles. I surmise that he traveled by train as it seems he could not have ridden a horse that distance in 8 days. I now need to find out where he could have boarded a train, safely, that would have taken him to Gordonsville. Been working with a curator in the Shenandoah Valley and he send me railroad maps that show a direct line from Chattanooga, through Knoxville to Lynchburg, VA. Train change necessary in Lynchburg north as the gage of the tracks changed there. Both Chattanooga and Knoxville were in Union hands by the fall of 1864. I have CSA receipts for fodder signed by Dr. Holloway in Gordonsville on Oct. 18-19, 1864 and Staunton on Oct. 20, 1864. He reported for duty in the "Georgia Brigade" on or about Oct. 21, 1864 near New Market. Thanks in advance for any help you may give me.
