John Washington Durvin, Hanover Artillery

He was last recorded as present on the Company muster roll dated April 30, 1864.

Subsequently two more Company muster rolls survived to be recorded in these Compiled Service Records. As he was not recorded, we have, therefore, to assume he was dropped from the rolls, could be transfer, discharge, death, desertion, captured, etc. We do not know.

However, it appears he later appears on a Pension list. There should be available his application papers which should reveal his end of service information. I would suggest you try to procure these records through these message boards.

He was listed as:
* Hospitalized 11/28/1863 Charlottesville, VA (With acute bronchitis)

* On rolls 4/30/1864 (place not stated) (Present)
He also had service in:
VA Nelson Light Artillery
Other Information:
died in 1893

Company Record of Events

Dec. 31, 1863 to Apr. 30, 1864 dtd Apr. 30 1864 stationed at Somerville Ford,

On 4th May ordered to march to meet - the enemy at - the Wilderness On 5th & 6th engaged in fight. On 7th left for Spottsylvania C.H. reached there 10th and engaged the enemy that eventing, two men wounded. Conduct of men highly commended by Brig. Gen. Long. Retired from position on 11th. On 12th under heavy fire but not-engaged. On 13th went into position. Engaged on 14th & 15th. On 16th Relieved. On 18th Kept ready to go into position. One man wounded. On 21st commenced moving towards Hanover Junction, reached there the 22nd. Went into position on 24th remained Here till 12th When moved towards Atlay’s [sp?] on 1st, part of Battery engaged on 3rd engaged all day in heavy fighting fourth [sp?] marched in pursuit of enemy to Big Lick Roanoke Co. thence marched through Staunton to Winchester. Reached there 3rd July. On 4th marched to Halltown thence on 5th to Sherpardstown Crossed Potomac on 6th thence to Sharpsburg, Boonesboro to Frederick City. On 9th engaged and defeated the enemy at Monocacy River. Lt. Hobson and two others killed. 1 Corpl wounded and Lt. Woodroof wounded & captured by the enemy. On 10th started to Washington D. C. Came to Blair’s House. On 11th under fire. On 11th & 12 not engaged. On 12th fell back and reached Leesburg on 14th. On 16th left for Berryville. Train attacked by cavalry and Battery engaged. On 17th reached Berryville. On night of 19th marched to Winchester. On 20th engaged enemy with Ramseur’s Division Infantry support. Abandoned Battery & it was Captured, losing two Lieuts. Barge and Latham mortally wounded and ? men, two of whom died, and all the Battery except casinos and 1 limber. Lost 22 horsed. Fell back to Strasburg, thence back across the Potomac at Williamsport. remained on day in Maryland, then returned to Bunker Hill. On 7th August remained with Army marching up and down the valley until 29 August when we received New Battery of 4 Napoleon Guns. Lieut. Basge died on 1st August. O. Sergt.
