John Washington Durvin

A couple years ago I got the Compiled Service Record for my great great grandfather, John Washington Durvin, from another source – not the service provided by these message boards. From these records - he enlisted on May 21, 1861 (at Beaver Dam) in the Hanover Artillery ( Capt. William Nelson’s Co. VA Light Artillery). He was listed as present on the muster rolls for May 21 – July 1, 1861; July – Aug. 1861; Jan – Feb 1862; Mar – Apr, 1862; and May – June, 1862. Then when this unit was disbanded, he transferred to the Amherst Artillery (Capt. Kirkpatrick’s Co. of Light Artillery). He was listed as present on the muster rolls for June 30 – Oct. 31, 1862; Nov. – Dec. 1862; Jan. – Feb. 1863; March – Apr. 1863; Apr. 30 – Aug. 31, 1863; Sept. – Oct. 1863; and Dec. 31, 1863 – Apr. 30, 1864. He was listed as absent/sick for the muster roll of Nov. – Dec. 1863. He was admitted to the CSA General Hospital Charlottesville, VA (acute bronchitis) on Nov. 28, 1863 and returned to duty on Jan. 8, 1864. He received clothing at the hospital on Dec. 12, 1863.

According to the VA Regimental Series on the Amherst Artillery and the book “Four Years in the Confederate Artillery” by Henry Robinson Berkeley – the Amherst Artillery pretty much ceased to exist on March 2, 1865 at the Battle of Waynesboro. 36 members of the unit were captured. I can find no record that John Washington Durvin was among these P.O.W.s or any record that he signed the Oath of Allegiance. I’m not even sure if he was at this battle, as his last muster roll was dated Dec. 31, 1863 – Apr. 30, 1864. I know that he survived the War, as he is in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Does anyone have any additional information on John Washington Durvin? I would appreciate any information.
