Re: Harpers Ferry, July 8th 1864 ?

Here's what I have on the actions at Harper's Ferry in July 1864 by Gordon's Division and Terry's brigade that included both the 42nd and 48th Va. Who was your ancestor that you mentioned? If captured on the 8th, he was probably among those left behind or stayed behind as Gordon's division moved away from Harper's Ferry on the night of 7 July.

Terry’s Brigade Skirmishes with Union Forces

Terry's bde report says in morning bde departed Antietam Iron Works and marched [south] down northern bank of Potomac River "to the immediate front [point] of the enemy's defensive works on the Maryland Heights opposite Harper's Ferry, above and between that place and the heights. During the day the march was somewhat retarded by the feeble resistance on the part of the enemy, but they soon gave way before the [Gordon's] Division skirmishers. Three men of the brigade were wounded this day." Terry's bde report shows bde with 3 EM WIA and 6 EM MIA this day. [48Va: 139a][42Va: 278a, 902]

Gordon’s div marches from Antietam toward Harper's Ferry and skirmishes with enemy. 2d Bde marches 4 miles [48Va: 39,335,151]. For position of the brigades of Gordon's div this day see OR Atlas Plate 84/16. Terry’s Brigade is shown moving against Fort Duncan.

Jacob Lemley, VBB, 48Va, says clear and pleasant. Left camp at 7 a.m. Moved toward Harper's Ferry. "Marched 2 miles and came in contact with the Yankees. We got to Md. Heights at 9 o'clock [a.m.]. Heavy skirmishing all day near the old furnace." [48Va: 81]

Gordon’s Division Engages Federals at Fort Duncan

General Jubal Early, commanding 2nd Corps, wrote later that: “On the 7th Rodes moved through Rohrersville, on the road to Crampton's Gap in South Mountain, and skirmished with a small force of the enemy, while Breckenridge demonstrated against Maryland Heights, with Gordon's division, supported by his other division, now under Brigadier General Echols, who had reported for duty.

“While these operations were going on, McCausland had occupied Hagerstown, and levied a contribution of $20,000, and Boonsboro had been occupied by Johnson's cavalry….”

“My desire had been to manoeuvere the enemy out of Maryland Heights, so as to enable me to move directly from Harper's Ferry for Washington; but he had taken refuge in his strongly fortified works, and as they could not be approached without great difficulty, and an attempt to carry them by assault would have resulted in greater loss than the advantage to be gained would justify, I determined to move through the gaps of South Mountain to the north of the Heights. [42Va: 234, 385]

Jedediah Hotchkiss, Topographical Engineer, 2d Corps reported later that on this day Gordon's div drives in enemy outposts at Fort Duncan and Maryland Hts; then supported by Wharton's div, Gordon engages enemy to within 600 yds of their very strong works. See OR Atlas 82/1. [48Va: 28Y,1020]

Terry's 2d Bde, Gordon's div, marches toward Harper's Ferry where it drove enemy into fortifications. Skirmished with the enemy until night, then marched to Norristown; total march 8 miles [48Va: 39,335,151]

Jacob Lemley, VBB, 48Va, says clear and pleasant. "The Yankees are still on the Heights in Maryland. We are still skirmishing with them. Laid all day here." [48Va: 81]
