Moses Eudailey does not appear on the casualty list of the 22nd Virginia Battalion at Gettysburg as recorded in Thomas M. Rankin's book in H. E. Howard's Virginia Regimental History Series. The unit as a whole was later charged with negligence by General Heth, who wrote to General Lee on 18 October 1864, recommending that the battalion be disbanded. Heth quoted Colonel Brockenbrough, the brigade commander at Gettysburg, as saying that he did not believe that 20 men of the 22nd Virginia Battalion went into the charge [Pickett's] ... that they shamefully ran away under the shelling prior to the charge. Yet the unit may have been unfairly maligned; about 27 men became casualties at Gettysburg on 1 July and 3 July, so many did their full duty. Often when soldiers perform badly the trouble can be traced to faulty leadership. For instance, two regiments of the brigade did not immediately move forward when the charge commenced and then had to run to catch up. That kind of disorder would appear to be the responsibility of the brigade commander.
