Have new info on John James Cumby. Found where someone trying to join "United Daughters of the Confederacy", listed info found in Virginia State Library, page 547 of volume 4 of the manuscript Confederate records in the archives division, info given is John Cumby was a private in company (either I or 1) of the 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment, Campbell county, commanded by Cap. William B. Rector and Robert W Withers.Rules and regulations to join were that the men must have served "Honorably" in the confederate Army,Navy,or "Civil service",or of those men unfit for active duty, who "loyally"gave aid to the cause. Must have proof from the War dept. in Washington D.C.,plus a certified copy of a Confederate Veteran's pension application on which pension has been granted, with certified proof of applicant's relationship to pensioner.
He was from Charlotte Co. Va., born June 1836--died Aug.31, 1904 in Staunton Va. and was married to Sarah Ann Blankenship, married 1857.
Is this still "without doubt" the same person as mentioned before, or does this give a different light on the soldier? Could he have been a civil servant soldier, and maybe was a "runner" ??????? Help !!!! Help!!!
