Yes an old saddle maker and WWII veteran I knew was in the Cavalry during WWII. He told me they were armed with a M1911 pistol and hand grenades. He said they would catch tanks in a vulnerable positions and use the hand grenades on them while riding by. He also said at the end of the war when ships were hauling war equipment back to America, thousands of sets of WWII Cavalry equipment (WWII McClellan saddles and all their tack) was thrown overboard on the trip home.
