I think it must have been rough on the horses/mules when food and shelter were thin. (as well as soldiers)
And, I am reminded of the book "War Horse" (movie too) and saw how the horses during WWI died in hordes pulling the heavy cannons and etc.
I supposed the Civil War Cannons were heavy too.
