Wes,
This is a longshot, but a lady named Carolyn Sowell compiled an excellent book called "Upshur County, Texas Confederate Veterans" which lists the men who served and information she was able to collect with references listed for each individual veteran. The book is no longer in print, but the Upshur County Library in Gilmer has a copy in their small genealogical section. The library number is 903-843-3995. You might call them to see if they would make a copy of the page with your ancestor. I have a number of pages, but unfortunately the page which would have listed Baily Barton is not one of them. In addition, Ericson Books published a compiled list of veterans called "Greg & Upshur Counties in the Civil War" which can be found at the Clayton Genealogical Research Library in Houston and it is still in print.

These two books may not give you any more detail than you already have, but my experience of leaving no rock unturned has paid off in several cases. William Walter Adams was another member of the 2nd Texas from Upshur County. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg. He had been transferred from conscript camp to Co D of the 2nd Texas on Jan 8, 1863. He probably would have been among the 150 men Col. Smith brought back from Texas. Instead of returning to the 2nd, W. W. Adams joined Likens' 35th Texas Cavalry late in 1863 and served the duration of the war. His widow filed a pension, but did not mention his being in the 2nd. Most likely because he was dropped from the rolls of the 2nd as a deserter which would have disqualified her for a pension.
