It would have had to be a recruiting/training facility where soldiers returning to their commands assembled. See the previous discussion of the Regimental Depot. No telling where Bailey reported on his return to the regiment. It was most likely in the Houston/Galveston areas.

Bailey BARTON, Private, Company D, 2nd Texas Infantry, enlisted July 26, 1862 at Gilmer by W. R. Heath for the war, captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863, paroled July 7,* marched out of Vicksburg July 11, furloughed July 17, absent without leave from November 22, 1863**, dropped from the rolls as a deserter March 26, 1864, ordered to rejoin company July 8, re-joined at Galveston July 24, 1864 from Depot, deserted at Galveston September 3?, 1864, no further records

* Believe this was a furlough of 30 days at which time they would have been advised on where and how to proceed. However, Col. Smith on receiving orders Sept. 17, expressed concern of proceeding thusly since they had not yet been exchanged. Getting the word out to the men at their homes must have been haphazard.

** I believe this was the date of their exchange.

Note: I suspect that he originally on deciding to return, reported himself to a local Conscript/Recruting Officer who contacted authorities on how to return him. Subsequently, he was provided transportion to an assembly point, depot, from which he was returned to his regiment once they had determined it's location.
