From what I know, William's father was also named William. What I am looking for is William's brother George. According to family oral history, William came to States with 2 brothers, George and Charles. Through my search, I have found Charles (Carl). I am now searching for George but have had no luck. I am trying to discern whether August Beckmann and George Beckmann are one and the same. The Gessner ship passenger list has no George....but it does have August, Carl, Wilhelm and Friedrich. I understand that Germans often went by their middle names. That is my thinking here. Did August use his first name for legal purposes (such as enlisting in CSA) but went by a his middle name George with family and friends? Any thoughts?
