Re: Spruce McCoy Baird
In order to even get a basic understanding of the Arizona Brigade or the Westward Expansion Movement of the Confederacy early in the War, one needs to realize that most of the Confederate soldiers from Texas, including Baylor himself, were members of the Knights of the Golden Circle. The traditionalist historians, books, and websites try to minimize the significant and crucial role this secret organization played not only in the Western Expansion Movement but in the Civil War as a whole. Perhaps the best authority on the part these KGC soldiers played in the taking of Union camps in Texas and Arizona is Donald S. Frazier who wrote "Blood & Treasure - Confederate Empire in the Southwest". This book was published by Texas A&M University Press, College Station, 1995.
