George, I agree with how you worded your statements as correct. However, as you know many junior officers were elected prior to the re-organization of 1862 a few even prior to the War. I don't believe there was any specific reason why an officer could resign. Many times his resignation letter can be found within his Compiled Military Service Records as I'm sure you are aware of. Lieutenant Kidd of Company K 9th Louisiana Infantry resigned as near as I can understand it because his heart was not into the War anymore. The Colonel accepted his resignation with a vote of thanks for what Lieutenant Kidd had done prior to his resignation. Many times a doctors report would be included in the resignation letter. My speculation would lean towards a medical reason since the descendants remarks, he walked with a limp was stated. If there are a list of reasons why officers could resign I have not run across it.
