Re: Ephraim Henry of Capt W.R. Marshall's Artiller

Patrica............ Your ancestor may have actually been a Union soldier from east Tennessee. The only Ephraim Henry I could locate was in the Union 9th Tn Cavalry. 26 east Tennessee conscripts were assigned to the Marshal Battery in the summer of 1864. 24 of the 26 deserted. One was my wife's ancestor, John L. Collins of Sullivan County. Your ancestor was probably a Union man to begin with. Here is the info on my wife's ancestor : About Collins, John L.This is taken from the book " Mountain Rebels: East Tennessee Confederates 1860-1870 " page 108 : " Men often slipped off as quickly as they were gained. For example,in the summer of 1864,twenty-six East Tennesseans assigned to Marshall's Battery from the Conscript Bureau, were supplied with clothing to the exclusion of the older members of the unit, and were drilled until all were competent artillerymen. Unfortunately, 24 of the 26 deserted. " I believe John may have been one of the 24. After years of believing John was probably a Union Soldier in the Civil War I am now convinced he was " conscripted " into the Rebel Army after finding what I believe to be his brief Confederate service record in Marshall's Company of Tennessee Artillery ( the Steuben Artillery )on FOOTNOTE John was probably drafted sometime during the spring- summer of 1864 just before or after the birth of his daughter,Nancy. He first takes the Oath of Allegiance at Atlanta Sept 27,1864 after he was probably given the choice of that over a Yankee prison camp. He was then sent to the military prison in Louisville,Ky where he again " took the oath " on Oct 22,1864 and was released " north of the Ohio river " where he agreed to remain till the end of the war. Most of the men that did this while they didn't take up arms again, usually made a " bee-line " for their homes !!! John is described as 5'10" grey or " hazel " eyes, fair complexion, dark hair and a " conscript " from " Sullivan County,East Tennessee." There are several John Collins that served in area Union units he could have made it back home and joined the Federal Army.
