Joseph Johnson, age 31, Private, Capt. Albartus Forrest's Company Tennessee Volunteers,* enlisted March 17, 1862 at Mouse Creek, McMinn County, Tennessee by Col. W. M. Bradford for 12 months, captured at Vicksburg, Miss., July 4, 1863, paroled July 10, furloughed for 30 days, July 22 while in transit at Enterprise, Miss., receipted for an issue of clothing July 30, 1863, no further records**
* This company subsequently became Company F, 31st Tennessee Infantry which designation was changed in June, 1863 to 39th Tenn. Infantry
** There are no surviving muster rolls post Vicksburg. The 39th along with the other regiments of Brig. John Crawford Vaughn's brigade were mounted in November 1863 and served out the war as Cavalry. They served in Jubal Early's 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign and served with Pres. Jefferson Davis' Cavalry escort from Charlotte, N. C. until surrendering at Washington, Ga. May 5, 1865

After the surrender of Vicksburg, Miss., Pemberton’s army was paroled and at Enterprise, Miss., the troops were furnished a thirty days furlough and instructed to report at the end of that time at such places as the commanding General had designated.
