I have two receipts showing a land owner in Dickson County paid taxes on 29 June 1866 due under the provisions of "An Act for the Collection of Direct Taxes in Insurrectionary Districts within the United States, and for other purposes." approved June 7, 1862, and the Act amendatory thereof, approved February 6, 1863. Can some of you learned persons who frequent this message board explain in layman terms what this was all about?
