James,
Lt. Giles and Captain Pearson quarrel on October 22nd 1864. Pearson shot Giles in the hip, Giles returned fire, killing Pearson. At his court martial Giles was found not guilty of murder, citing that he acted in self defense. After the war James Giles submitted an application for disiability while serving in the Union Army. It was turned down on the grounds he was not engaged in battle with Confederates when wounded.

Perhaps he should have tried to pass off his wound as a result of his previous duel while in the Templer Lewis Scouts with a regular Confederate oficer, he he. James Giles must have liked a fight no matter what army he was in :-)

J. Giles
