J.S.

I'm afraid I can't be of a lot of help in your inquiry, but I do happen to have the book "Forgtten Soldiers, History of the 4th TN Volunteer Infantry Regiment USA 1863 - 1865", which speaks a bit about each man on the roster.

It says under Company F - " First Lieutenant Alexander B. Wilson, age 25, enlisted as a Private at Greeneville on 6 April 1863. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 26 April 1863. Along with his company, he was captured and paroled at McMinnville on 3 October 1863. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 5 October 1864 and commissioned First Lieutenant on 13 February 1865. he mustered out with the Regiment on 2 August 1865".

Then, it also says under Company H - "Wilson, Alexander P., Second Lieutenant, Company H, age 42; enrolled as a Private at Strawberry Plains, 5 Aug. 1863; born Randolph County NC; mustered in at Loudon, 7 May 1864, discharged to accept commission, 11 Oct. 1864; file contains emlistment papers".

Obviously from the ages, etc., these were two different individual soldiers. From the DOB of 1838 that you are looking for, it seems that the 1st one may be your man.

My GG Grandpa James P. Taylor was also a Private in this outfit, as was his future brother in law William Burrell, and the two Wards listed may also be related to me (jury is still out). My McGill lineage was in Greene Co. and / or Greeneville during the 1850 - 1870 time period as well.

Hope that this helps some!

ROY
