The area between Clarksville and Dover was a guerrilla hotbed indeed and for a time the area was thinly held by Union troops. The 5th Iowa Cavalry was the only mounted unit operating in the area - the rest were infantry: 71st Ohio, 83rd Illinois, 11th Illinois, 13th Wisconsin, etc.

Some of these regiments only did rear area duty for the entire war.

The area is not properly controlled until Col. Sanders Bruce (a pre-war business partner of John Hunt Morgan) shows up with a full brigade in December, 1862, basing out of Clarksville.

The guerrillas liked to operate out of Palmyra and Yellow Creek along the Cumberland River.
