Re: " North of the Ohio River "

Louisville seems to have been the processing station, which decided which Camp a captured POW would be sent.
I have seen several of my distant kin, who were conscripted and deserted at first opportunity, not Captured in any Battle, with the notation
Sent North of the River, also a 3rd G.G Uncle a civilian who was arrested by Provost Marshall's in Roane Co. He was arrested with two other Gentleman, I cannot find out what he was involved in. He was living prior to the War in Indiana, I don't know if he came back to Tennessee because he was pro-southern, or for business and got stuck? And turned himself in for a safe trip back north?
Now back to the Deserters, I am not saying these men were cowards, but that is how it appears, perhaps they had religious reasons?
I say this because I have seen many others who joined Union outfits, so their were other options? I believe these men were sent North, for their own safety, to protect them from reprisals from Neighbors and the home guards, also to deny The CSA from needed Soldiers.
Now back to my original question does anyone know, how were these men treated in the North, with all appearances of being Cowards?
