Re: Richland Station, May 23, 1863

Hi Andrew,

Long time no hear.

Portland/Richland Station is on the Louisville & Nashville RR that runs between the two named cities. This are was locked down tight by the Federals with garrisons all along the line at towns. Portland is only an hour from where I live to the east.

I cannot figure out how they got there in this part of Tennessee. If one was being transferred to the Trans-Miss this was not the way to go to get there - that would have been around Chattanooga and through Alabama into Mississippi.

Perhaps there was another Richland Station in Tennessee? There were then two towns with the name Middleton (one is now called Midland). Portland is in Sumner County and the late Walter Durham wrote a book about that county in the Civil War that might be of help for you.

Hope this helps.
