Richland Station, May 23, 1863

I am researching Georgia's Toombs-Benning Brigade, so operations in northern Tennessee stray from my core area...

I have two lieutenants from the 17th Georgia reported captured at Richland Station, Tenn, (modern Portland) on May 23, 1863 - Laurence O'Keefe, C/17 and Charles Klink, I/17. This is substantiated by their CMSRs, though I suppose its possible they were received here as POWs. At this time the 17th Georgia was a few miles from Raccoon Ford in Virginia. A published roster of Georgia troops says that O'Keefe, at least, had been transferred to the Trans-Mississippi. Based on what I know of O'Keefe, this would have occurred in the Spring, 1863, timeframe, so he may have been travelling there.

Richland Station seems to be pretty far north for a handful of Confederates to have intentionally passed through, especially by this time period. Does anyone know of any action that occurred there on this date (I already know about the action there in March, 1863) or have any ideas how these two happened to show up on the north side of Nashville? Any guidance is appreciate

Best Regards,

Andrew Johnson
