Thomas H. Scates, of Edgecombe County, served as a private in Company K, NC 15th Infantry. Enlisted 4-24-61, he was listed as wounded, and following this was in hospital in Richmond, VA 5-28-64. Returned to service 7-18-64, deserted to the enemy approximately 2-28-65, and gave an oath of Allegiance 3-2-65. The record does not show him spending time as a pow.
