Re: Hospitals in Columbia, S. C.

Les:

There is a manuscript collection at South Caroliniana which deals with the hospitals in Columbia, or at least one of them. (There actually may be several such collections.) I sighted it a couple of years back, and found nothing in it of any interest to my subject, and so did not record the name of the collection). It contained, if I recall correctly, a journal and perhaps some other miscellaneous papers, specifically on Columbia hospitals. It particularly dealt with the Second North Carolina Hospital, but there may very well have been others mentioned as well.

There is also a typescript memoir at South Caroliniana by a Mrs. Augustine Smythe (I think I have the name right) who was a McCord before her marriage postwar. Her mother, a noted author in her own right, lived on Pickens Street adjoining the College. The McCord ladies spent a great deal of time nursing there. I am sure that Allen Stokes, the director of the Manuscript Division, can point you in the right direction, and give you other sources as well.
