Re: The Sgt. Kirkland Story
In Response To: The Sgt. Kirkland Story ()

I don't doubt the story, because there were certainly other battles in which similar scenes occurred. I am most familiar with Gettysburg and can recall several instances when a soldier risked his life to assist the exposed wounded of friend and foe, and not always with a happy ending. Between Cemetery and Seminary ridges an informal cease fire occurred for a few minutes while a Federal tended to a wounded Confederate, whose comrades stopped shooting once they realized what was taking place. As the Federal soldier resumed his place in line, one of the Confederates warned that the truce was concluded, shouting to the effect, "Down Yanks, we're going to fire." On another occasion, a soldier was killed when he tried to show the same mercy, either because his opponents did not understand what he was trying to do, or simply out of spite. Humanity and mercy were always scarce on a battlefield, but a handful of men on both sides were evidently willing to risk all to perform such a mission.
