Herb, my dad's destroyer picked up some Jap soldiers after sinking a transport ship. The only reason was because some general wanted to interrogate them about some pending invasion. I do not doubt there were some mercies extended in WWII, but I am skeptical any Japs did it. Perhaps they wanted to interrogate the Americans or they wanted more slave labor. It would shock me if I am wrong.
