Maybe it's because they were just not well understood Jim. I am not the scholar and sure no expert but I do know there was a lot of affection and trust between my own GGGrandparents and their 'Servants'. True, it's only one family in remote NE Georgia, but I don't truly think they were unique. The Servant family remained after the war ended and still have some family there today.
On the enlistment of Native Americans. Is it safe to assume they weren't listed as such even though they were there? I'm not meaning the Indian Regiments or those in the West but the individuals still in the SouthEast.
