Pam, earlier in the war tha ANV did enjoy much success but after the Gettysburg battle they were never the same. In September 1863 the AoT had it's greatest victory at Chickamuaga and followed that up with the siege of Chattanooga. We know it ended in defeat on Missioanry Ridge and the following campaign into Georgia that ended with Sherman taking the city. But for a while things looked bad for the Union army out west.

By late summer 1864 Lee's army was pinned at Petersburg, never again to manuver at will. At that same time the AoT was beginning it's march into Tennessee. Again, things ended badly but I suspect moral was higher for the AoT, at least until the Franklin battle, than it was for the AoT. That's just my opinion and if you have that and a $1:00 bill you can buy a cup of coffee.

In his book, "This Astounding Close: The Road to Bennett Place" by Mark L. Bradley the writer provides us with tales of the men of the ANV walking home and passing through the lines of the old AoT. I therefore submit the idea that the AoT carried a bigger share of the southern battle than they get credit for.

P.S. I had great-grandfathers, uncles and cousins in both armies so I'm not saying one was better. They just deserve a little recognition.
