I can't state a time but I would look to the letters from home for some real indicators to start showing up. The letters and diaries of the soldiers themselves tell a lot but I find they can also be up and down in spirit. Bemoaning their fate while at the same time vowing to keep fighting. You also have to factor in location as I believe different areas saw things from different view points.
