Re: C F Ballard, 10th Regiment, Miss Infantry

I'll start at the end of his record, as that is the only card that shows his place of residence. Surrender documents at the end of the war show his residence as Desoto County.

His name is always shown as C. F. Ballard. He was enlisted at Holly Springs by Capt. Harris on May 15, 1862, for three years. Rank shown as 4th Sgt. He is carried on all existing rolls (some are missing) through Mar & Apr of 1863, as present with the rank of 4th Sgt. The roll of May & Jun is missing. On the roll of July & August 1863, he is shown present with the rank of 2nd Sgt. He is present at that rank through Nov. & Dec. 1863. On the roll of Jan. & Feb. 1864, he is shown as absent, furloughed for 25 days on Jan. 25. On the next existing roll, that of May 1 - Aug. 31, 1864, he is shown as wounded July 28, 1864, and sent to Gen. Hospital by the brigade surgeon. This date would correspond to the Battle of Ezra Church (or Lickskillet Rd.) near Atlanta. What happened between then and the end of the war is not covered in his record. The regiment was eventually sent to North Carolina where remnants, after consolidation with other regiments, were surrendered. However, Ballard's surrender documents indicate that he was back in Mississippi, a part of "divers companies and regiments (detached) of the Confederate States Army, commanded by Lt. Col. R.H. Lindsay". These men were a part of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, under the command of Lt. General Richard Taylor. He surrendered all forces in this department at Citronelle, Alabama, on May 4, 1865. The troops were not present at this surrender, only General Taylor and a couple of aides. The men were then directed to particular points for processing and parole, Ballard being among those paroled at Meridian on May 12.
