After the surrender at Vicksburg, July 4,1863, many of the Confederate solders were sent to a parole camp at Columbus, MS. What was the function of these camps? Were they run by the Union solders? I know some men were exchanged. Did the others have to sign an oath not to rejoin the War? Thanks, Bill Garner
