Re: Parole Camps
In Response To: Parole Camps ()

Soldiers captured at Vicksburg were paroled within a few days after their capture remaining with their units and marching out together. Within a week or so the army were given furloughs for about 30 days to report to a camp of parole at the conclusion.

They remained as a unit at these parole camps operated by Confederate authorities until exchanged as a unit, not as individuals.

I assume the purpose of these camps were to keep unit cohesion. I do not know if they were allowed to drill under arms or train in army tactics.

Their original parole certificates specified their not taking up arms until exchanged.

As expected, many men never returned to their commands at these camps or later.
