Re: 10th MS & 5th MS Infantry, Shiloh, book

Dear Jeff,

Heree is other info about the 5th MS (and a reference to the 10th at Shiloh) that might be of interest:

As mentioned in my postings on the "Mississippi in the Civil War Web page" concerning the execution of Pvt John Newton Mullins of the 10th MS, my g.g.grandfather John Jasper Newton Nash and his two brothers were in the 5th Ms Inf Regt... all enlisted on the same day in Aug 1861 and served at Pensacola. The middle brother Charles A. Nash got sick and was at home (later joined the 11th MS) before the 5th MS embarked for Corinth area during the western Confederate Army build-up leading to the battle at Shiloh.

At Shiloh my g.g.grandfather J.J.N.Nash was wounded and his younger brother Ira M. Nash mortally wounded in the opening hours of the first day of battle. Both were wounded at the same time during regiments first assult on the Union camps; I've walked the battlefield with my grandfather and have done so several times since in greater detail w/ my son (one of my classmates from West Point conducted several "staff rides" of the battlefield w/ foreign officers while serving with the U.S. Army Command and General staff College).

I provided a transcript to the National Park Service at Shiloh of a letter written a week after the battle describing my wounded g.g.grandfather's return home from Shiloh reporting the news of his brother Ira's death... the letter also mentions my g.g.grandfather's cousin Ben Nash of the 10th MS saving the 10th Regimental colors during the first day at Shiloh.

I also provided pictures of all three brothers to Grady Howell (maybe seven years ago)... but he ever did another volume of Confederate Soldier portraits; see Grady's response to my recent query in e-mail I sent last week... and I didn't realize you are with the MS dept of Archives and History before his response.

Sincerely,
Len Reinker

P.S. This past summer I took my 23 year-old son to a fantastic "southern immersion" family reunion held outside of Louisville, Winston County, MS.... one of them is a descendant of Maj Tandy of the 5th MS Inf Regt.
