Brent,

I'm guessing that you have a descendant looking to join. I imagine that all of the ancestors of Pvt. Prentiss are long gone. :) Pvt. James A Prentiss enlisted in the (New) Co. A, 3rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment (not battalion) at Enterprise on Sept 24, 1863, for 3 years. On April 11, 1864, he reenlisted for the war at Montevallo, Alabama. On Dec 16, 1864, he was listed as "missing in fight at Nashville, TN" (Battle of Nashville). Union records show him Dec 20, 1864, as a prisoner of war forwarded to Louisville. Dec 22, 1864, received at Louisville; Jan 2, 1865, received at Louisville Military Prison; Jan 4, 1865, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio; Jan 6, 1865, received at Camp Chase. On Jun 13, 1865, his signature appears on an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn to at Camp Chase, Ohio. He is described as a resident of Green County, Miss. Complexion: Fair, Hair: Light, Eyes: Blue, Height: 5' 10", Age 24 yrs.
